Tooth sensitivity makes it hard to eat, drink, and accomplish daily functions. Unfortunately, there are many causes of tooth sensitivity–that’s why it’s important to get dental advice as soon as possible. Contributing factors to toothaches and tooth sensitivity include worn or fractured tooth enamel, cavities, dental erosion due to acidic foods and beverages, an eating disorder or gastric reflux, or gum recession. Dr. Steven A. Beuligmann can help you identify the source of your sensitivity and prescribe proper treatment methods. Here are some possible treatments that he may recommend:
Root Canal: If your sensitivity is primarily in one tooth, is severe, and other treatments just aren’t working, your tooth’s pulp (located at the center of the tooth) may be damaged. In this case, we may recommend a root canal.
Fluoride: If the cause of your sensitivity is dental erosion, your dentist may recommend fluoride. fluoride will help rebuild your lost enamel. This will help reduce, or even possibly eliminate, the pain.
Desensitizing toothpaste: This toothpaste can actually block the nerves that cause sensitivity. Apply it consistently for best results, and look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on any oral health care items.
Covering Exposed Roots: If gum recession is part of the reason for sensitivity in your teeth, Dr. Steven A. Beuligmann may apply a sealant over your exposed roots to protect them.
After you’ve received treatment, remember that your sensitivity may return if you fail to take care of your teeth. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Make sure to brush gently and use desensitizing or fluoride toothpaste.
